Active students of the Environmental Engineering Study Program (2020 & 2021) in the Faculty Webinar Program – Sustainable University-Industry Collaboration held a Guest Lecture on Friday, October 20, 2023 at Majapahit Auditorium, Airlangga Sharia & Entrepreneurship Education Center (ASEEC) Tower, Campus B, Airlangga University. The guest lecture was delivered by Mrs. Queenie Yun-fong Lin, a PhD Candidate in Architectural History and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, with a research focus on sustainable conservation. She is currently working under the UNESCO Chair in Water, Ports and Historic Cities and in the PortCityFutures research group. He is also the editor of the journal Blue Papers: Water & Heritage for Sustainable Development by his lecturer, Ms. Carola Hein from TU Delft University. On this occasion he explained the importance of Water and its relationship with history in order to identify the problems found in sustainable development.
Water has a very important role in our history, cultural heritage and is also explained in relation to the arrival of the Dutch VOC in Indonesia. At that time, water was the main route for trade and transportation, so the Dutch built canals with development plans that could be used for hundreds of years. It is proven that the water from the existing canals can still be utilized properly. But it does not rule out the possibility that water quality can still decline over time. By understanding and appreciating the role of water in cultural heritage, history, and connection with the past, Indonesia can design a more sustainable and inclusive future, where water remains an important element in people’s lives and the development of the country. The guest lecture material presented added new insights about water for participants and was lively with a question and answer session with prizes at the end of the guest lecture.
